Why family friendly policies are good business sense
Working parents (and grandparents) have become the norm in many parts of the world. Ideally, every family would love to have another carer in the home to share the responsibilities and the workload. Families where all carers work fulltime, regularly face tiredness and even exhaustion. This arises from juggling complex competing demands and struggling to achieve some kind of balance between home and the work place. Family friendly companies recognise that a tired employee is not as effective in their work and these companies are the leading the way to address this balance. Read more here.

Remember Dad and Granddad on September 7th Spring is just around the corner and so is Father’s Day. How about giving the men you love the day off whilst someone else does the gardening or home maintenance tasks to get the home and garden “spic and span”. Angels are able to provide almost any non-tradesman service. General household maintenance, replacement of tap-washers or light-globes, sweeping paths, outside window cleaning, minor carpentry repairs, touch-up painting, lawn mowing, garden maintenance, gutter cleaning, fertiliser spreading, rubbish removal, weed control, pruning/trimming and car cleaning. What better present for Dad or Granddad than to give him the day off!

Fit & Well – Exercise tips for women in their 40s 1. Increase your core strength, balance, and flexibility. Work exercises like ballet, Pilates, yoga, or tai chi into your weekly routine to help "stabilize your core." This keeps your spine and body stable (using the muscles in your trunk, hips, abdomen and pelvis), which helps to reduce the number of falls and injuries as you get older, plus it improves your posture, balance, coordination, strength and flexibility to boot. 2. Do weight-bearing exercises. Bone loss often begins after your bone mass peaks in your 30s. So, during your 40s, it's essential to keep your bones strong in order to prevent the risk of osteoporosis and breaks in the years ahead. 3. Take up aerobics to keep your weight under control and help you make the most of the muscles you have now 4. Pace yourself. It's generally a good idea to squeeze in moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes every day (or most days) of the week. Read more here from Performance Body Works.
Here are some dental tips for children: • Begin brushing children’s teeth as soon as the teeth appear, with only a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Ideally, flossing should begin when two adjacent teeth touch. • Children should visit the dentist no later than six months after the first tooth erupts, or before the child’s first birthday. • Parents should not give an unattended or sleeping child a bottle with milk or juice; instead, children should drink water to prevent tooth decay. • Dental sealants are an excellent way to prevent tooth decay in children. The dental sealant procedure takes only minutes, is painless, is less than half the cost of a filling, and is virtually 100 percent effective at stopping decay. • Children involved in sports need proper mouth protection to prevent mouth injuries, knocked-out teeth, and possible concussions. Ask your dentist about customised mouth guards. • If a child, or an adult, has a permanent tooth knocked out of his/her mouth, follow these procedures: gently rinse (not scrub) the tooth off and place it in a cup of warm milk (salt water is the second best choice; plain water, the third best), call the dentist and bring the child and the soaking tooth in immediately for reimplantation and stabilisation. Welcome I am delighted to be extending a very warm welcome to new readers and wishing our continuing readers another happy month. Yet, another DIAL-AN-ANGEL office is celebrating their 20th anniversary. There is real cause to celebrate. Our family business is approaching its 42nd year of operation and the offices around Australia are ageing with us like fine wines and cheese. Through the ups of boom times and the downturns of recessions there has always been a demand for our Angels in your homes and even in your businesses. By attending to the needs of our ever-loyal clients, we have been able to provide work for Angels, right around Australia. That just gives us another reason to celebrate.
It is also encouraging to see that organisations are keen to reward and retain loyal employees by providing family friendly workplaces. It is the way of the future, which DIAL-AN-ANGEL pre-empted almost 35 years ago with its approach to corporations to provide their staff with home-based assistance. You can read all about this concept in our feature article.
And last but not least, three cheers to all the dads, granddads, and great granddads out there! Have a Happy Fathers Day.
Until next time, travel safely, Danielle Robertson CEO, DIAL-AN-ANGEL Pty Limited |
